In this episode, we’re continuing our season-long, deep dive into ENGAGE 2024: The Company Culture Report by asking: “Why are more employees returning to the office?”

As you can probably guess, it’s here that we’ll tackle the ever-shifting attitudes around “where we work.” Helping Beth explore these new findings on work preferences is Stephanie Downs, SVP/Senior Consultant at The Center for Sales Strategy.

 

 

Understanding the Shift

Last year's Engage survey indicated a prevalent trend towards remote or hybrid work, with only 17% anticipating a full-time return to the office.

However, the latest findings reveal a significant uptick, with 40% of respondents now envisioning a full-time office presence. What prompted this shift, and what implications does it hold for organizational dynamics?

“I have to admit I was surprised,” Stephanie says. “I'm also a little surprised that this is still as big of a topic as it is...I'm still having this conversation more frequently than I would think.

“But from talking to a lot of sales leaders about this, the root of [this shift back to the office] usually is accountability.

“Leaders are really saying they feel like they don't have as much accountability on their team if they're not in office. And I think that's driving some of the migration.”

The Future of Work? Focusing on Culture.

When asked what she would say to leaders who are looking to better engage their employees who feel dissatisfied with their current work model, Stephanie makes it clear.

“Hyper focus on culture,” she says. “Just absolutely hyper-focus on it. So shameless plug! Yes, you could hire Up Your Culture, which we would highly recommend.

“However, if you're doing it on your own, at least start somewhere. Because I mean, you say the word ‘culture,’ that's a big, broad topic. But think about all of the opportunities that exist to create a more engaging environment [no matter what your current work model is].

“The main thing, though, is you must have a clear mission. You must have a clear vision. I would start there if nothing else.

“Make sure that is well defined within your organization, and then start thinking of all of the ways that you can live that every day. When you have daily meetings and discuss what you're aiming for and discuss how you introduce new initiatives in the organization, ask yourself: ‘Does it align with our mission and vision?’”
